Death Café

  • Death Café is a global movement, started in 2011 by Jon Underwood. The idea is simple: offer people a space to talk about death openly, without it being morbid, clinical, or hushed.

Thousands of Death Cafe’s have been held in over 90 countries all over the world and Death Cafe Oaxaca & our monthly online Death Cafe is our contribution to this movement. And it is free to join.

Join us in Oaxaca or Online.

  • Death Café Oaxaca is a monthly in -person gathering where people come together for open, honest, and surprisingly warm conversations about death and dying.

We facilitate conversation in both English and Spanish, welcoming the full breadth of our community here in Oaxaca.

There is no agenda, no grief counseling, no set outcomes- just tea, sweet treats, and the kind of talk that remind us we are human. All are welcome: curious, grieving, afraid, at peace or anywhere between.

  • Each Death Café Oaxaca is structured to keep conversation genuine and unhurried. We gather in two to three small tables, each held by a facilitator - so every voice has room to be heard.

  • Death Café Oaxaca and Online are about being in community. There is no expert in the room — your voice carries the same weight as the person sitting across from you.

Come to share what you know, to listen to what you don't, and to be changed a little by both. This is a space built on the belief that when we talk about death together, we all leave more alive.

  • Each Death Café Oaxaca and Online are held by dedicated facilitators whose role is to create a space where everyone feels genuinely welcome.

They are here to hold the container - ensuring the conversation flows with care, that no one goes unheard, and that all who feel called to share have the time and space to do so.

  • Death Café is not a counseling service or a grief group — it is simply a space for open conversation.

But sometimes a conversation opens a door, and you may find yourself wanting more. Below are resources for grief support, end-of-life planning, and mental health care — offered here in the spirit of community, not as recommendations or referrals.

  • Help yourself to a drink or a sweet treat, find a seat, and settle in. Choose your table — English or Spanish facilitated — and get comfortable.

  • We open with brief personal introductions around the table, then move into open conversation. No script, no agenda — just an honest exchange guided gently by your facilitator.

  • Space for final thoughts, reflections, or anything left unsaid. Before you go, we ask that you fill out a short evaluation form — your feedback helps us grow.
